Disney Genie Overview

There are three tiers to the Disney Genie service as shown below.

Disney Genie is complimentary and included within the My Disney Experience app. By providing your interests it will suggest attractions, food and entertainment just for your vacation. Then it will help map out your day. There is a personalize daily itinerary which shows any reservations or plans you’ve made. Recommendations based on what you provided as your interests for that day and a suggestion on when to do them. A tip board which includes estimated wait times and even forecasted future wait times.  You can even live chat with a cast member.

  • THE BASICS – Genie Plus and Paid Individual Attractions

    • To get to Genie hit View My Day from the main screen or My Genie Day on the sandwich menu

    • You can also hit Tip Board from the sandwich menu on the bottom right

    • Hit Summon Disney Genie to set up your preferences

    • You can only use the Lightning Lane once per attraction

    • You can only purchase 2 paid individual selections per day, but they can be at any park.

    • You are not able to choose a return time, Genie + just presents the next openings

    • You can’t choose another return time until you’ve used your first OR if you haven’t used your first one 2 hours after park opening of the park you chose your first Lightning Lane for. If you didn’t book your first attraction right at 7am the 2 hours begins at the time you booked your first attraction.

    • You CAN choose return times for paid Individual Lightning Lanes so click the hour to see what’s available that will work for your schedule.

    • If you want to change your return time you have to cancel it, there is no way to modify it. Once you cancel it you can then choose a new return time for the same attraction.

    • You are able to scan into the Lightning Lane up to 5 minutes early. Make sure you scan at both check points and that the app recognizes you went thru. You can’t choose your next Lane otherwise.

    • You also have about a 10 minute grace period to use it.

    • The Tip Board is the easiest place to find Lightning Lane return times. You have to scroll thru attractions alphabetically. My Day shows what you already booked for the day in order of time and it fills in with suggestions. But if you don’t like the suggestions you can remove them.

    • Be sure to listen to the Audio Tales and play with the PhotoPass Lenses. Some can only be used when you are near certain attractions or locations. There are some really fun ones!

Genie + and Individual Attraction Selection Tips and Using Lightning Lane

  • TIPS

    • When you set up your Genie preferences you will make selections for each day you are visiting. Genie already know what park you will be at via your park pass. You will be shown a list of attractions to choose from, asking to select the ones you’d like to ride. ONLY choose those you’d like a Lightning Lane for. That will force the system to show those attractions first or at the top of your Tip Board. You are able to do this each day after midnight or prior to 7am. This will help you see return times quicker and help ensure you get one for the most in demand attractions.

    • If you don’t like what you see for return times, keep refreshing your screen. There is no way to choose a future time if a there is availability prior to that.

    • Always check back later in the day, they may release more times or people cancel windows. Something that was sold out may show up with a time again.

    • It’s a good idea to set alarms on your phone for the next time you can select an attraction so you don’t miss out. For example you book Slinky Dog Dash at 7am for a return time of 3-4pm. You can’t select another Genie + attraction until 11am because Hollywood Studios opens at 9am and you don’t want to wait until 3pm after you’ve ridden Slinky to select your next return time! Set an alarm for 11am so you log on and grab another time, then again at 1pm, 3pm etc.

    • Genie service, which is complimentary will suggest attractions for you to do next based on the current wait times and the preferences you provided. Some of those suggestions will make sense and some may not so it’s good to still have a plan of what you want to do for the day.  It’s also trying to direct people around the park where it is less crowded.

    • Return times CAN overlap so book a window of 4:35-5:35 and 4:50-5:50pm. Then you can ride attractions back to back.

    • You will need a battery or Fuel Rod for your phone. Using the app all day along with taking photos and videos will drain your batter quickly.

    • The best strategy I think is to stack your reservations for later in the day. Book them to overlap and get a bunch done within a short period of time. This works well at Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios because you may have to crisscross the parks a bit. This may not work at Epcot due to how large it is.

    • If you have any issues go to a blue Guest Experiences umbrella and they can help you out. You can even get a refund if the paid individual attraction you bought breaks down during your window or you end up not using the service at all.

  • ARRIVE EARLY!

    • If you arrive early utilizing early park entry for Disney resort guests you should not need to use Lightning Lane for at least the first hour.

    • You can hit some of the paid individual attractions too like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Flight of Passage in less time and saving you from having to purchase return times per person.

    • After you finish that first attraction, work your way thru the attractions you’d like to ride with a wait of 20 mins or less until you hit your first Lightning Lane return time.

    • During busy times return times will go very fast so it’s imperative that you log on and are ready by 7am and grab the most popular attractions you want first. Some will be gone in seconds!

  • STRATEGIZE!

    • Try to focus on attractions in yellow above. The rest usually are not needed because the waits on average are little to non-existent.

    • If the posted wait time is 10 minutes that means it’s pretty much a walk on.

    • I wouldn’t recommend paying for Expedition Everest or Space Mountain, the waits are not usually long enough to justify the cost.

    • Lightning Lane is almost always a walk on. The time you wait is really just walking thru the queue so 5-10 minutes to board.

    • Rise of the Resistance will sell out every day. So if it is a priority for your party and you don’t want to wait an hour or more, buy the Lightning Lane early first thing in the morning. It will be worth the money.

    • A lot of return times book up early for the popular attractions. If you want to hit certain attractions then choosing by attraction first is the way to go. Slinky Dog for example will commonly sell out for the day by 7:01am. So that means at 7am you may have to choose a return window for 4pm.

    • A great strategy for Hollywood Studios if you are staying on Disney property; Book Slinky right at 7am. Then go in and buy your individual return time for Rise of the Resistance. If you do those two things at 7am you should be in good shape. Then at 11am choose Smugglers Run, Tower of Terror or Rock n Roller Coaster and so on.

    • At 7am try to grab one of these attractions. They are the most popular so you will want to grab them first if you really want to ride. The return times may be for late in the day but that’s ok if these are a priority for you. *Will sell out for the day.

      • MK -  Jungle Cruise* or Peter Pan’s Flight*

      • HS - Slinky Dog Dash*

      • Epcot – Test Track

      • AK - Navi River Journey or Kilimanjaro Safaris

    • If you are not staying at a Disney resort then you won’t be able to purchase an Individual attraction until the park opens. Resort guests can do so at 7am so some attractions may be sold out by that time. It’s worth checking back, in case more times open up so never give up!

    • Remember to give yourself a break for meals and keeping time available for any reservations you have booked. Genie WILL NOT be looking at your reservations so remember the time and where they are so you can make it.

    • If you are planning to park hop, grab a return time before you leave for that park so you have it lined up and ready to go when you arrive.

    • If you are hopping to another park and want to buy a paid individual attraction, make sure it’s after 2pm. But try not to choose a time that’s too late. Rise and Remy’s are known to break down so you may not get to experience it if there are any issues.
