Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is making fans' dreams come true at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. I mean, who wouldn't want their very own R2D2? That lovable droid / co-pilot / sidekick from the classic Star Wars films is just so endearing!
On my recent trip to Walt Disney World, I was lucky to score a reservation for Droid Depot so I could assemble my very own Custom Astromech Unit.
At my reservation time, I walked in with my daughter (who was my plus one) and got in the line for people with a reserved time. There was a line for walk-ups that Cast Members were working in between those with reservations. Guests can choose either a BB-series or an R-series unit. I knew I wanted to make the droid from my childhood - an R2 Unit.
I chose my type of droid, paid my fee ($99.99 plus tax) and received a basket with a diagram showing the parts I needed to assemble my droid. We walked over to the conveyor belt with the jumble of parts. It was a little confusing and overwhelming at first. There were so many pieces and so many choices of color combinations! I was glad to have my daughter with me to help me navigate the parts I needed.
*I highly recommend that you check out the choices ahead of time so you have an idea of what you are looking for. It's easy to get overwhelmed with the choices.
I knew for sure I wanted the transparent top and a white body. From there I just selected my other parts to color-coordinate and waited for a spot at the assembly station. A Cast Member helped my put the pieces together and showed me the various controls.
The droids interact with the Star Wars land, but I found him to be too bulky to want to carry around with me. There is a backpack available for purchase, but I decided I had spent enough money for that day. Though, I did go back the next day and purchase a personality chip which changes my droid's sounds. There was a little space outside the Droid Depot where we could drive them around to test them out.
I recommend this activity for adults and for older children. The droids are fun to build and drive around at home and make a fun souvenir!
