Terceira Island - where is it?

Updated: May 27, 2022

Well our trip from Rome through the Aegan Sea and its amazing islands ultimately took us to an island in the Azores called Terceira wrapping up our beautiful two week journey. Being one of the largest islands of Azores archipelago at 153.9 square miles we took our ground transportation out to the Pousada de Angra do Heroismo Castelo de S. Sebastiao which only took about 30 minutes. I love the sense of adventure and this property served me well! On the top of a cliff a 16th century Fortress known as Saint Sebastian’s Little Castle has been converted into a hotel. The rooms have been renovated, of course, but the essence of a fortress is there in everything you do. To start our day the hotel offered a wonderful breakfast buffet in our hotel to fill our stomachs as we wandered the village.

The property offered as much uniqueness as one would expect from an old fort and we found a way to get as much as we could out of the three days we had. There were walkways down tunnels into the old jail entry that had waves crashing against the exterior walls. Then to walk to the top of the fort and wander high above the sea and the village with incredible views of everything was breathtaking.

We took the time to walk to the other side of the bay where we ate at the Pirata Gastropub serving a Mediterranean Portuguese flavor off of their grill and even found ourselves with the home flavor of Coca-Cola. We were able to wander the streets and stores shopping for local crafts and I (who loves needlework) found Acorbordados de J.H. Toste for some gorgeous fabric and patterns (and someday I will finish this great needlework).

One of our brave souls took the time to head to Algar do Carvao lava caves to see some more of the history of the island.

Finally it was time to pack up and head back to the United States after two amazing weeks wandering Rome, Greece, and the Azores.
